God has blessed me with a new full time ministry. I am now a caregiver for a wonderful eighty year old woman, nicknamed Rocky. Rocky has Alzheimer’s and many other health issues. I am the night watch. I go to her side at 9:00 pm and do not leave until another caregiver comes at 6:00 am.
I check her blood sugar level twice in the night and make sure her oxygen plus CPAP mask stays properly positioned on her face. Rocky only has one lung, and is on oxygen 24-7. I take care of any physical needs she may have and calm her should she have nightmares or hallucinations during the night. We pray together at times and other times I pray alone or with another caregiver for her. I trace the sign of the cross with my thumb on her forehead.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you: the Lord lift His countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 4:26
She sleeps soundly tonight.
I will command my angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
Psalm 91:11
My husband tells me that I come home from this work beaming every morning. I asked God why this is so. My heavenly Father spoke the reason to my heart.

You, daughter, are in the presence of My night watch angels I have commanded to encircle Rocky as she sleeps. All night long you work among her angels. How could your face do anything but beam?
The truth is that we all work and play among angels. We walk with Jesus. We live under the watchful eye of the Father and the Holy Spirit guides us to and through each God-given mission. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, those men and women of faith who have gone before us. We live our small lives here a mere part of something so much bigger than ourselves - a spiritual realm far beyond our understanding or imagining.
This morning, as Maya and I were waiting for the bus, a flock of sparrows flew overhead. Maya looked up and said, “Look Mama! He watches over me.”
Dear Lord God,
I can so easily get tunnel vision. I get caught up in the day to day and ignore Your big, beautiful picture. Come Holy Spirit to remind me, to lift my eyes and fix them on Jesus. Sharpen my vision and stretch it far beyond the peripheral. Sacred vision - that is what I pray to bear these burdens here and to daily serve and bless others. Sacred vision - to see Jesus in each face, to feel the presence of angels all around me and to joyfully fulfill every one of Your good purposes for my life. Amen
